Description of book: Helgoland is a ‘rock’ in the middle of the North sea, 70km off the coast with about 1200 inhabitants. The Island is the first place on earth from where ornithologists conduct systematic research on bird-migration and is very popular amongst amateur bird-spotters. The photographs focus on the younger generation of the residents. The people who have spent the first 16 years of their lives on the island and have concluded their middle-school education. Suddenly, they have to decide wether they will continue the life known to them, or leave it all behind and move forward by traveling to the mainland and pursue further education or experience. A choice not taken lightly and usually not made within a few months time. The book explores the contrasts and similarities between the migratory people and birds of Helgoland, and focuses on the inevitable choice every islander has to make.

The best thing about self-publishing: When someone you don’t know e-mails you for a copy
